This class will explore video-art by learning the digital video camera, Final Cut Pro, Compressor and DVD Studio Pro software, lighting and sound while experimenting with multiple modes of execution, presentation, and distribution. Students will come to understand digital video as a flexible tool that is able to communicate ideas through a large variety of conceptual and technical strategies such as continuous looping, working in series and sound/image relationships as well as presentation vis-à-vis video projection, monitors, flatscreen and the web. The class will focus on what video art is and how video may be made and seen in the contemporary art world today. The class will screen a broad selection of historical and contemporary single channel video and video installation works; read essays on video art and interviews with video artists; and visit gallery and museum exhibitions. Lectures, discussions and critiques of student projects, works screened and the readings will lead to an understanding of the current applications for video experimentation.
