Modeling and Moldmaking is an introduction to plaster mold-making using clay and wax for both ceramics and sculpture. Includes impression molds, single-part molds, two-part molds, and multiple-part molds. Exploration of various casting materials. This course is designed to teach the students how to make plaster molds for casting multiples in clay, wax and other materials. They will learn about the history of mold-making from Egyptian times to the present day, the different materials used to make molds and about the purposes to which artists and industry have put molds. Emphasis will be accuracy and craftsmanship in mold-making to ensure a better cast; however, students will be expected to justify their choice of objects, their reasons for casting those projects and the materials in which they cast them.
