FA 209a introduces students to the practice of photographic image making within a fine arts context. Students are acquainted with the 35 mm camera, exposure techniques, black and white film processing, printing, mounting, and basic lighting. Emphasis is placed on the development of technical skills in relation to personal vision. Work is in black and white.
Within each of these areas, the student will gain an understanding of the range of technical approaches possible.
The purpose of this course (along with its additional semester counterpart, Photo 209b) is to provide a technical and conceptual background upon which to build a viable and engaging photographic practice within a contemporary art context. These ideas will be presented via a series of slide lectures, readings, discussions, critiques and assignments. We will also address what it means to analyze and criticize your own photographs as well as those of others within a historical and contemporary art context.
