Wheel Throwing is an introductory ceramics course that uses wheel-throwing techniques to pursue visual results in several three-dimensional exercises. Students learn how to use these techniques to realize their own creativity and artistic visions. Traditionally the end result of throwing has been functional pottery—things that fulfill need. These objects are shapes or forms that have a content and a structure of their own. By logical extension, the wheel can also be a tool to produce shapes independent of function. This course will explore both functional and sculptural forms in facilitating ideas and executing assignments.
