Christian Cummings' art has been described as charmingly casual, quixotic and painstakingly impulsive. In his show Uninspired Objects Christian uses "uninspiration" as his muse, making artworks that are both deftly enigmatic and playful. The centerpiece of his show is a human-size steel bell of patchwork construction titled Cymbal. Unringable, unmovable and weighing in at more than 1000 lbs, Cymbal sits on the floor, like a disgruntled worker protesting employment. On the surrounding walls are tiny cast-plastic sculpturettes made from junk-drawer trinkets. Insect-like These works claim the space for all things insignificant and trivial. Each sculpture is lovingly crafted to render artifice with meticulous fidelity. Moreover, the quirkiness of these works is only amplified by the absurdity of their titles, some of them exceeding 150 pages in book bound length.
Christian lives and works in Los Angeles and was recently awarded an MFA from the University of Southern California. He has shown his work at the Santa Monica Museum of Art here in Los Angeles and with Creative Time in New York.
