/How to register for next semester
Before registration | Registration| After Registration
Preparation Steps BEFORE you Register:
1. Determine what classes/requirements you need to take: Read your STARS report to determine what requirements you need to fulfill. Access, view and print your STARS on-line through MyUSC: http://www.usc.edu/myusc
WHAT IS StARS? The primary function of Student Academic Record System report (StARS) is to assist students with charting their academic progress by providing a timely analysis of progress toward degree completion. This report contains all USC course work and accepted transfer work that applies toward degree requirements, and may include skill level, general education, major, minor, and grade point average. This very important document is used to determine whether you are on track to graduating and receiving your diploma!
More information at http://www.usc.edu/dept/ARR/stars/generalinfo.html
2. Do you need to take a language placement exam? If so, please check the USC Testing Bureau website for dates and times: http://sait.usc.edu/testing_bureau/
3. Are you trying to waive into an intermediate or advanced level studio course? If so, you need to have your portfolio reviewed by our faculty. Portfolio review/prerequisite waiver forms are available in WAH 116 and can also be downloaded at: http://roski.usc.edu/downloads/waiver_form.pdf
4. Find out your web registration time online available mid October (https://my.usc.edu/, go to OASIS, then click on "permit to register"). While you're at MyUSC, click on the OASIS tab, confirm or update your current address - click "Change of Address." Also: You can check for any restrictions and holds at OASIS. Take care of these BEFORE your appointment to register, otherwise you won't be allowed to enroll. Measles Immunity and Tuberculosis Screening are examples. Information on health restrictions can be found at: http://www.usc.edu/student-affairs/Health_Center/docs/07.immunization-requirements.pdf
5. Look through the Schedule of Classes to see what classes are available to meet your requirements. http://www.usc.edu/soc Spring 2008 available in October!
CAUTION: It may be tempting to use the "Schedule Builder" feature of WebReg as soon as the upcoming schedule comes out. Be aware that many courses will fill up and close between the time the schedule of classes goes online to when your appointment to register comes up.
6. Undergraduates: If you need to meet a General Education requirement, check the following website for descriptions of GE courses offered: http://www.usc.edu/dept/LAS/general_studies/GE/courseguide/
7. All FA majors have a mandatory advisement requirement. In order to register for Fall or Spring terms, you MUST make an appointment and come in for advisement! Sign up for an appointment to meet with your Academic Advisor, Christina Aumann (last names A-K) or Antonio Bartolome (last names L-Z). Declared Fine Arts majors will be advised according to class standing. To schedule an appointment, please use the "Advisement" tab on MyUSC. Alternatively, you may come in person to Watt Hall 116. Check the FA Undergraduate Advisement Schedule here:
http://roski.usc.edu/student_guide/index.cfm?mainpageid=166 Please arrive ON TIME and bring a current printout of your STARS report, available at https://my.usc.edu - MANDATORY! We recommend printing in grayscale, so that all the text prints out. During your advisement appointment, we will discuss your remaining degree requirements, classes for next semester, and other academic goals, such as pursuing a double major, minor, study abroad, and when you might graduate. Come prepared with questions and course ideas for next semester.
8. Obtain D-clearance. Departmental authorization is required to register for some classes at USC. In the schedule of classes, after the 5-digit section number, you will see an "R" or "D." "R" means any student may register, as long as they have met the prerequisites for the course, and there are seats available in the class. "D" means you need to ask the department that offers the course for permission. D-clearance for Fine Arts courses will be given to declared FA majors DURING your advisement appointment. Departmental Clearance is not automatic: you MUST make a request. Note your D-clearance expiration date, and make sure you register by then!
9. On-line source for more info about USC faculty and courses: http://www.senatecourseguide.com "Provides a service for students to evaluate their past and present professors at the University of Southern California, thus allowing them to make more educated decisions on their coursework selections." Another resource: https://my.usc.edu click on Course Evaluations. "This site provides members of the USC community with results from undergraduate students' course evaluations. Results reflect the opinions of those students who took the time to fill out an evaluation form. The results tell us something about student satisfaction, but they do not tell us how much students actually learned or benefited from the course."
Registration:
Proceed to an internet station for web registration, or in-person to the Registration Building to register as soon as possible on or after your registration appointment time for best class selection. Follow the instructions CAREFULLY! Use the Web Registration link on MyUSC.
After Registration:
1. Double check your registration: Are you registered for the correct classes, for both a lecture and a lab/discussion, and for the right number of units? If you want a printed version of your enrollment, go to "Enrollment Verification" through MyUSC (https://my.usc.edu), or go to the Registration office at the corner of Figueroa and Exposition. It is CRUCIAL that you confirm your registration using one or more of these methods, as problems have occurred with web registration where a student thinks they are registered for certain classes, but they are only "scheduled" for a course. Avoid problems. Double check!
2. Settle your bill with the Cashier's Office. ALL STUDENTS MUST REGISTER AND SETTLE THEIR BILLS ENTIRELY BY THE SETTLEMENT DEADLINE TO AVOID LATE FEES. Check your balance through the USCe.pay tab on MyUSC.
3. USC Health Insurance is mandatory for all USC students. Only students who can prove other coverage may apply for a waiver.
For more information, go to http://www.usc.edu/student-affairs/Health_Center/ins.index.shtml
4. For other important dates, deadlines, and the academic calendar, please refer to the "Registration Calendar" at the Schedule of Classes, www.usc.edu/soc
5. Please contact your Academic Advisor if you have questions or trouble with anything! Please include your full name, USC ID number, and phone number when leaving a voicemail or sending an email.
