Intermedia

In the Intermedia area, we recognize that the digital media are not independent areas of study within the arts, but that today all art practices must consider the implications of technology. In presenting the digital medium as a tool for art-making, we ask our students to consider both the new implications of the digital in art, and the relationship of the digital to long-standing explorations within the fine arts.

Courses in Intermedia offer students hands-on instruction in a wide variety of digital media, using the most advanced tools for the investigation of digital photography, interactivity, and video experimentation. Our faculty are working artists with specialties in each of these areas, who bring their experiences and skill to the classroom--both as technical advisors, and in the rigorous consideration of students' interests, development, and intellectual growth.

Study in Intermedia begins with introductory courses in digital photography and/or digital video and interactivity. Students then progress into intermediate courses that refine the thinking and production in each area. In the advanced studio courses, students establish expressive independence within their medium, supported by an understanding of the conceptual and historical contexts of their work. In addition, Intermedia provides a non-studio lecture and screening course. This class, titled Ideas in Intermedia, tackles the most relevant and timely concerns in this ever-evolving territory of study with a new topic every semester.
