The purpose of FAPH 209 is to provide a technical and conceptual background upon which to build a viable and engaging photographic practice within an art context. Introductions to basic 35mm-camera functions as well as black-and-white analogue procedures are the main technical emphases of the course. Assignments and ideas will be presented via a series of slide lectures, readings, and discussions. This course will introduce and expand your understanding of aesthetic, historical, and contemporary works, issues, and concerns. In addition to learning to make your own photographs, the question, “What is a photographic practice within an art context?” will be explored. Furthermore, we will address what it means to critically evaluate your own photographs and those of others within an art context.
