about the exhibition

老家 // OLD HOME is the Chinese concept of a person’s homeland. Although rooted in real geographies, 老家 // OLD HOME exists mainly in the psychological geographies of those who live apart from their place of origin. This exhibition project explores five artists’ processes of recalling, imagining, and representing diverse homelands across diverse diasporas. The exhibition consists of a handcrafted storybook created by Amy Fang, which incorporates reflections on 老家 // OLD HOME by artists iris yirei hu, Tshab Her, Sichong Xie, and Stephanie Shih. These artists’ works, words and ephemera come together in a form reminiscent of family scrapbooks and photo albums, honoring the vulnerability and intimacy that come with recalling and sharing our homelands. The book will be exhibited in a living room-like setting designed especially for the Poetic Research Bureau in Los Angeles’s Chinatown.
