Artists Statement

I grew up in Southern California, spent my childhood in Huntington Beach and then moved to Los Angeles in my early 20’s and have made this home ever since. The oldest of five boys, I played sports, enjoyed the beach and went to flea markets. In my adult life I made part of my living scouring flea markets and yard sales and in doing so I developed an artistic eye. I attended several community colleges over the years, finally finishing my AA at Los Angeles City College and then completed the Studio Arts Program at UC Irvine, with a BA in 2011.

I began studying with Rachel Rosenthal in 2009 and worked with her til her passing in 2015 and continue to study with the group to this day. Rachel’s mentorship in particular had a massive impact on my growth. She awakened me to my own body, physicality, and athleticism. In 2016 I began to work with Rudy Perez, up until the pandemic stopped all of his classes. Having been drawn to art centered on the body--performance and with my interest in the repurposing of the discarded object, With this combination, my ongoing development as an artist, working with both ideas has provided me an unusual perspective on the body and object as something more than a commodity. I am very grateful to be able to go back to school at this point in my life, allowing myself this experience to develop and grow as a person and as an artist will be an exciting challenge that I am looking forward to.
