Design, Dialogue, and Discovery in London
Connection and curiosity filled the room as Dean Lin-Kirk and the USC Roski delegate of staff and faculty gathered with current study abroad students for a special brunch in London. Hosted during the spring semester, the event brought together the dean, staff, faculty member Suzanne Lacy, and students participating in Roski’s design program at University of the Arts London (UAL).
Conversation quickly turned to students’ experiences abroad, ranging from navigating a new academic system to engaging with London’s vibrant creative landscape. Much like Roski community gatherings elsewhere, the brunch created space for reflection, storytelling, and meaningful dialogue rooted in a shared passion for art and design.
Students described their time at UAL as both challenging and deeply rewarding. Many noted that the program offers a markedly different approach to design education and encourages independence and experimentation in new ways. Immersion in London’s cultural and artistic scene has also broadened their perspectives and influenced how they are learning to approach their creative practice.
The dean, staff, and faculty expressed enthusiasm for hearing firsthand how students are adapting to and thriving in an international context. Discussions touched on the value of global learning experiences, the importance of cross-cultural exchange in design, and the ways in which studying abroad can shape students’ artistic journeys and future careers.
Beyond academics, students shared highlights from their time in London, including exploring museums, galleries, and drawing inspiration from the city’s rich history and contemporary design scene.
The brunch served not only as a moment for students to reconnect with the Roski School community, but also as a reminder of the school’s commitment to fostering global perspectives in art and design education. As the program continues, students look forward to deepening their experiences abroad while staying connected to the broader USC community across the pond.
