Out of Character: Self-Imaging through Narrative examines the work of contemporary artists who construct characters in their work to explore and better understand aspects of themselves and their own lived experiences. The notion of self is embodied, performative, and intersubjective, comprised of many various factors that include, but are not limited to, race, nationality, and class.
Participating artists include: Alex Bag, Claudia Cano, Sharif Farrag, Max Grau, Xandra Ibarra, Roy Martinez, Jayson Musson, Jon Rafman, Martine Syms, and Ilona Szwarc.
Using costumes and props, masquerade and gestures, and strategies of appropriation, through their characters the artists in this exhibition expose racial, ethnic, gender, and socioeconomic identities, making works that simultaneously engage and challenge our expectations.
Out of Character is curated by Ana Briz, Yishun Li, Seymour Polatin, Wenzhuo Wu, and Emilia Huiqian Yin, 2019 MA Candidates in Curatorial Practices and the Public Sphere Program at the USC Roski School of Art and Design.
