Creating Swimming Pool Party
Admission is free. Reservations required here.
It’s 2080. The world is divided between those who can swim (Floaters) and those who can’t (Rocks). Floaters control the world, and keep Rocks from swimming. At the Clandestine School of Rocks, rebellious rocks learn to swim.
Part interactive game, part immersive theatre, and part comedic storytelling from the mind of acclaimed performer Robert Farid Karimi, Swimming Pool Party explores racial disparities in swimming ability, and the intergenerational trauma at the root of them. Swimming Pool Party features an exciting cast of performing and visual artists, including award-winning performer Harry Waters Jr., water healer Rocio Navarro, sound design and percussion by DJ Gingee, visual design and music by DJ Arshia Haq, projections by Jojo Guarin, experience design magic by Rich Diltz, and MORE! The performance will educate, entertain, and surprise you, with delicious prizes and a dance party.
The following day, Karimi, Sarah Hayes (Department of Physical Education), Marientina Gotsis (Director of Creative Media & Behavioral Health Center), Rod Hernandez (Assistant Professor of English at Cal State University, Dominguez Hills), and members of the artistic ensemble will discuss the process of creating Swimming Pool Party, the issues at the heart of the show, and the power and pitfalls of transdisciplinary collaboration.
Karimi developed Swimming Pool Party as an artist in residence at the USC Physical Education Department.
