Amanda Flowers

Interdisciplinary artist Flowers explores the hidden communication and connection with our living planet through the practice of secrecy and sacristy tools historically used in the preservation of Black ancestral linkage. Moving through a myopic language of identification she implements numerology, metaphysics, and spiritual mythologies, developing her own visual vernacular termed “Leavings.” Together her work depicts a safe place to dissect the duality of herself, a safe haven to sift through repressed energy. She creates a fragmented code from the threads of primordial dreamscapes to the cosmos, and in so doing a broader consideration of what makes a safe space.

Amanda Flowers (b.1995) is an interdisciplinary artist from the Bay Area based in Los Angeles. As a graduating senior in high school, she was enrolled at Arizona State University as an aerospace engineering major to be an astrophysicist. She discovered her love for painting at ASU and returned home to the art scene. She moved to Los Angeles and got immersed in the entertainment industry as an emerging artist. Flowers applied and enrolled in the art program at California State University, Los Angeles for an undergraduate degree in Studio Arts in 2023. She depicts scenes from her dreams, memories from her grandparents, and imagined terrains of “The Shadow Realm.” Her art practice is embodied by the essence of her maternal grandparent’s journey from North Carolina during The Great Migration in the late 1960’s. She integrates an ancestral bridge to honor her lineage through envisioned ancestral motifs. She is inspired by a constellation of Black spiritual mythologies from the emotional subconscious to the metaphysical and physical histories of Black enslavement, creating a rich territory, a personal science, of her own cosmology of the space where emotions lay. Flowers encompasses these elements on burlap, wood, clay, oil, and deconstructed art pieces.
