ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

A Love Carried Across ( The sweet inheritance) explores the emotional and material histories of Filipino migration through the intertwined themes of longing, belonging, nostalgia, and love. The exhibition considers how migration reshapes ideas of home, family, labor, and identity across generations.

Drawing from my own Filipino American experience and familial histories, the work uses painting, sculpture, collage, video, and installation to examine the memories carried across oceans and passed down through generations. Pineapple becomes both a symbol of family inheritance and a metaphor for the sweetness, sacrifice, and complexity embedded within migration.

Through fragmented images, inherited materials, and reconstructed spaces, the exhibition reflects on what is left behind and what is carried forward. These works consider migration not simply as a movement from one place to another, but as an ongoing emotional journey shaped by separation, and resilience.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Edmund Arevalo is a Filipino American artist based in Los Angeles. His work explores the layered histories of identity, and migration. Arevalo weaves his interdisciplinary practice with colonial legacies, personal family stories, and the broader experiences of the Filipino Diaspora. He fuses intimate portraits with archival materials, his practice reimagines and challenges dominant narratives of migration, assimilation, and historical erasure. Grounded in both personal memory and collective history, Arevalo’s work becomes a visual act of reclamation honoring his heritage while navigating the complexities of being Filipino American.
