ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
It is undeniable that the human relationship to the web has been a controversial topic among U.S. public spheres, with most discourse regarding this topic taking place digitally. But what transpires when internet discourse is translated into tangible objects whose material associations oppose that of the digital sphere? In her thesis show titled I’m Scared, Angela Anh Nguyen confronts this question by materializing the immaterial. This is performed through the conflation of two gestures: (1) The physical act of “tufting” (a form of rug-making) and (2) the digital act of the “scroll”. As a result, her body of work presents a single psychological response through two contrasting modes of interaction. Fundamentally, in I’m Scared, there exists a confrontation, causing the spectator to question one’s relationship to the digital sphere by way of the “rug”.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Angela Anh Nguyen (b.1995, Los Angeles) is an American textile artist whose work explores the complex relationship between online culture and the material world. Tufting collages that incorporate diverse media artifacts, she produces images that are simultaneously anachronistic and contemporary. Always tinged with a sense of humor, they encourage viewers to reflect on the absurdity of the present. Bringing together the digital and industrial, the personal and the political, Nguyen’s work presents a multifaceted meditation on modern life.
