Kevin Emilio Contreras

MFA Art '27

Kevin Emilio Contreras (b. 1992) is a Queer Peruvian American visual artist from Los Angeles. His practice spans photography, videography, and ephemeral collage work. His work focuses primarily on the documentation of the LGBTQ+ community, particularly BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color); as well as creating otherworldly environments that are both liminal and infinite, which often pull abstract elements from the subconscious. As both spectator and active participant, he has spent the past eight years creating a location-specific archive of underground Queer performance artistry; as such, his work offers a singular and idiosyncratic peek into an otherwise untold people’s history of Los Angeles. In this respect, he sees himself as an amateur folk historian. By documenting his community, he hopes to preserve it for posterity and as a testament to the resilience of the human condition.
