Graduate Teaching Assistantships
As a graduate student at Roski, you can offset the cost of your degree and enhance your relationships with faculty and students by working in a Graduate Teaching Assistantship.
About Assistantships
You can apply to be assigned to a Teaching Assistantship in the second year of your program. The roles are awarded on a competitive application basis and come with partial tuition remission, monthly compensation for your teaching-assistant duties and health benefits.
TAs work with Roski professors on assigned tasks for 10 hours a week. You’ll be paid a monthly stipend for your part-time salaried position.
You can apply for a Teaching Assistantship whether you’re an MA, MFA Art or MFA Design candidate, but eligibility is limited to full-time students.
Preparing to TA
Required coursework for MA and MFA candidates will help you to develop and practice your teaching abilities.
Making and Curating Art: Pedagogy and Praxis
In this four-unit lecture course offered in the spring semester, you’ll receive a foundation in the history and theory of studio art and curatorial education with the objective of developing skills for teaching in these areas. The class is a requirement for both MA and MFA Art students.
Design Pedagogy
This four-unit elective course for MFA Design students offered in the spring semester features lectures and hands-on instruction on creating coursework, writing syllabi and developing in-class assignments. Coursework includes an overview of the design process and process thinking; technology-based instruction; design pedagogical methodology; and visual problem-solving as part of a pedagogical practice. The class is a requirement if you are an MFA Design student wishing to apply for a teaching assistantship in your second year.
